Buttafuoco / DOC Oltrepò Pavese EN

The origin of the name seems to be “al buta a me el fogh” which means “it warms me up like fire” and is related to the fact that this is a very strong and full wine. Another legend tells the story of a ship of the Austro-Hungarian empire which was named Buttafuoco in honour of a navy battalion that was fighting the Kingdom of Sardinia’s army in Oltrepò. Instead of dealing with the safety of the river Pò, they took hold of the wine of a close-by winery. This wine, i.e. Buttafuoco, was so good that it mitigated the agitated spirits of the imperial army and made them more keen on peace than war.
